A Brief History of
Hope Gospel Assembly
|
| Reverend Peter Garth, Pastor |
Hope Gospel Assembly was started in 1959 as The Sunday School at Sandy Park by a Deacon from Rehoboth Gospel Assembly. Originally the small church held cottage style meetings until a suitable location was found at 136 Old Hope Road. This property was later purchased and the wooden structure that existed there was eventually replaced.
Several stalwarts of the Gospel Assemblies movement were involved in the founding of this very unique church among them are Pastor Henry White, who was in charge of the church in the very beginning. Other leaders were Joseph Auxilly, Pastor Clive Afflick, Lancelot E. Smart, Pastor Wilbur Smith and Pastor Albert Karram.
Pastor Karram spent over twelve years giving oversight and support to the church until 1983 when our current Pastor, the Reverend Peter Garth, arrived.
Along with many new members and many changes, the church still benefits from the wisdom of these steadfast men of God whose faith has stood the test of time. Among them we must include our very own Deacon Ronald White, who recently received the Pastors’ Award for outstanding and dedicated service.
In the meantime, the physical development of the property continued. It is a little known fact that Hope was among the first churches in Jamaica to have a fully air-conditioned building. Further construction was undertaken and a new building was completed and dedicated on Sunday, June 18, 1989.
God will not forget the “labour of love” of the many committed saints who have contributed to the growth and development of our church. The “Oasis of Love in a Dry and Thirsty Land” will continue to present the Living Water, so that many more will have a life-changing encounter with God.
