Who We Are

We believe that God has a purpose for his people. Hope Gospel Assembly is a “purpose driven church” and we operate under the following five tenets:

Worship (Matthew 4:10 Be a magnifier of God)

Service (John 13:3-5 Be a minister of a “hands-on” faith)
Evangelism (Mark 4 Be a messenger of the good news!)
Fellowship (Ephesians 2:19 Be an active member of God’s family)
Discipleship (1 Peter 2:21 Be a maturing follower of Jesus Christ)

About Us
A Brief History of Hope Gospel Assembly

Rev. Pastor Peter Garth
Reverend Peter Garth, Pastor
Hope Gospel Assembly was started in 1959 as The Sunday School at Sandy Park by a Deacon from Rehoboth Gospel Assembly. Originally the small church held cottage style meetings until a suitable location was found at 136 Old Hope Road. This property was later purchased and the wooden structure that existed there was eventually replaced.

Several stalwarts of the Gospel Assemblies movement were involved in the founding of this very unique church among them are Pastor Henry White, who was in charge of the church in the very beginning. Other leaders were Joseph Auxilly, Pastor Clive Afflick, Lancelot E. Smart, Pastor Wilbur Smith and Pastor Albert Karram.

Pastor Karram spent over twelve years giving oversight and support to the church until 1983 when our current Pastor, the Reverend Peter Garth, arrived.

Along with many new members and many changes, the church still benefits from the wisdom of these steadfast men of God whose faith has stood the test of time. Among them we must include our very own Deacon Ronald White, who recently received the Pastors’ Award for outstanding and dedicated service.

In the meantime, the physical development of the property continued. It is a little known fact that Hope was among the first churches in Jamaica to have a fully air-conditioned building. Further construction was undertaken and a new building was completed and dedicated on Sunday, June 18, 1989.

God will not forget the “labour of love” of the many committed saints who have contributed to the growth and development of our church. The “Oasis of Love in a Dry and Thirsty Land” will continue to present the Living Water, so that many more will have a life-changing encounter with God.

The Articles of Faith
We believe in one God, eternally existent as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
We believe that the Bible, composed of the Old and New Testaments, is God’s inspired and infallible Word, and is the supreme standard and final authority for all conduct, faith, and doctrine.
We believe in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.
We believe that man was created in the image of God, but, by willful transgression, became sinful and is justly under the condemnation and wrath of Almighty God.
We believe that the only salvation from the guilt and condemnation is through faith in the righteousness and atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that this salvation is the free gift of God’s love and grace.
We believe in the personality of the Holy Spirit and that His ministry is to reveal Christ to men, to convict of sin, to regenerate repentant sinners and, by His presence and power, to sanctify the lives of the redeemed.
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ instituted the ordinances of baptism and communion, that baptism is only to be administered upon profession of faith in a crucified, buried and risen Saviour, that communion is only for believers, is to be preceded by faithful self-examination, and is in remembrance of the Lord’s death until He comes.
We believe that a New Testament Church is a body of believers, baptized by immersion, associated for worship, service and the spread of the Gospel of the grace of God to all the world.
We believe that there will be a resurrection of the just and the unjust; the just, having been redeemed by the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, to be with Him throughout eternity in glory; the unjust, having died impenitent and unreconciled to God, to eternal condemnation in Hell.
